In some ways Mike Huckabee would be a perfect Presidential Candidate for the GOP. At least for the Christian Right part of the base, thats angry at GOV Mitch Daniels for calling for a truce on the Culture War. Mike Huckabee’s campaign would be mostly about the Culture War. But about returning to “Traditional Values”, abortion being strong against Gay Marriage and Gays in the Military etc. He along with Rick Santorum, Michelle Bachman, Sarah Palin all play very well with that faction. Mike Huckabee since he’s so focused on the Culture War, would be the Christian Right’s perfect candidate. Instead of speaking about States Rights and Federalism and letting the States deal with these issues. Which is what States Rights used to be about. He would be speaking in favor of a Higher Power then States Rights meaning God. And that the Federal Government trumps the States on these issues. When protecting “Traditional Values” is at stake. He’ll be speaking about what former GOP Presidential Candidate Alan Keyes call America’s “Moral Crisis. And fixing that should be America’s number one priority.
The problem with GOV Huckabee’s message is that even though his message plays well with the Christian Right. It doesn’t play well anywhere else in the country. The 2012 General Elections will be about the economy, Foreign Policy, deficit and debt. And if GOV Huckabee’s message is about issues that a majority of the country aren’t interested in. Then he’ll seem out of touch, not just because of his positions on them. But for speaking about things that the country is not focused on. Mike Huckabee’s “Traditional Values” Campaign is not well suited for the Republican Party right now or for Independent Voters. Its better suited for a Socially Conservative 3rd Party, that Mike Huckabee would be a favorite to lead. GOV Huckabee doesn’t seem to have a message that addresses the economy, deficit, debt and Foreign Policy right now. And after losing Congress in 2006, the White House in 2008 and dropping more seats in Congress. And democrats still holding the White House and Senate now. The GOP is looking for a winner who’ll address these issues.
Another problem for Mike Huckabee is that Economic Conservatives don’t trust him. He had a reputation as being moderate to progressive as Governor of Arkansas on Economic Issues. Like Health Care and Education, that he’s now trying to run from. Which of course doesn’t play well in a Fiscally Conservative party. Neo Conservatives don’t trust him, he’s not one of them and he doesn’t seem to have much of an interest in Foreign Policy. One of the biggest issues for the 2012 Presidential Campaign. Especially since America is now involved in three wars. That will all still be on the plate for whoever the President is in 2013. So Mike Huckabee if he ran for President, which I suspect he will. Will have two factions in his own party that won’t be with him. As well as Independent Voters who tend to be be liberal-libertarian on Social Issues against him as well.
I don’t see Mike Huckabee with the campaign that I suspect he will run. Ever getting the GOP Nomination, especially in an election that will be dominated by Economic and Foreign Policy. But I think he would make a good Vice Presidential nominee for the Presidential Nominee. Especially a someone that the Christian Right doesn’t trust like Mitt Romney. And would’ve made a good VP Candidate back in 2008. And then America would’ve never heard of Sarah Palin, which would’ve been a good thing.
