Mandatory minimum sentences are a prefect example of how the War on Drugs is actually a War on Freedom instead. Because since the War on Drugs was started in the early 1970s. Illegal narcotics usage as actually gone up not down and we now have more people in prison in America. And the largest prison population in a world as a result. So we are not discouraging people from using or possessing illegal narcotics but locking them up instead and paying a. Double price for that to house them in prison but now that they have a felony record it becomes very. Difficult for them to get a good job or go back to school bringing additional costs to take payers. Who now have to pay to support them as well as punishing people for what they do to themselves not other people. But who ends up paying the price for that. Yes the people convicted of using or possessing illegal narcotics but also the tax payers who have to pay. For them to be in prison and take care of them when they are out.
